Asset Seizure Targets Calabrian Mafia

Italian police have seized assets worth $150 million euros ($200 million) including a luxury hotel in Rome from Giuseppe Mattiani, his son Pasquale, and other family members on suspicion that they have ties to the Gallico clan of the ‘Ndrangheta or Calabrian Mafia as reported by ANSA.

The hotel is identified as The Grand Hotel Gianicolo which is “one of the swankiest properties . . . that affords one of the most breathtaking views over Rome” as reported by ANSA:  “it is one of the best places in Rome to drink in the staggering array of domes and bell towers dotting the skyline of the world’s leading open-air architectural museum.”
 

 
The ‘Ndrangheta controls the European cocaine trade, and in recent years it has migrated from Italy’s southern Calabrian region into wealthier northern regions to launder the drug money.
